Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Russian Translation Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM), New York. The Russian Translation service provides translation of parliamentary documents from English and other languages into Russian. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Chief of the Russian Translation Service.
Within delegated authority, the Reviser will be responsible for the following duties:
•Revises translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards.
•Translates, mostly without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards. Makes full use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools and actively contributes to their utilization and implementation of any related IT tools and improvements.
•Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams, while meeting or exceeding required workload standards.
•Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.
•Carries out linguistic research and provides input to multilingual terminology database and related reference tools.
•Validates new terminology and coordinates terminology work with other duty stations and international organizations;
•Acts as a focal point for terminology, with responsibility for Service activities relating to multilingual terminology portal, as required;
•Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Service, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.
•Participates in the setting of terminology standards.
•Supervises the work of small groups of translators/précis-writers.
•Assists the Chief of Service/Section and Senior Revisers in managerial, administrative, operational, and supervisory responsibilities of the Service/Section, including by acting as First Reporting Officer, as required.
•Performs other related duties as required.

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors in the relevant language or any United Nations language competitive examination in the relevant language held before 2017.
A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, editing, self-revision, verbatim reporting, copy preparing, proofreading or production editing is required. Experience in the use of standard computer-assisted-translation (CAT) tools is required. Three years of experience working within a multilingual setting is desirable.
Fluency in Russian, which must be the candidate’s main language. Russian translators must also have an excellent knowledge of English and of one other official United Nations language, as tested by the relevant United Nations language competitive examination.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include a computer-based written assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers In accordance with established rules and procedures.
