Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Division for Science Policy and Capacity-Building (PCB), and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Small Islands and Indigenous Knowledge Section, the incumbant will work together with the responsible programme specialist to support PCB’s Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) programme and in particular the extrabudgetary project Biodiversity and Ecosystems Network (BES-Net) phase II programme (2020-2028) in concert with the extrabudgetary IPBES Technical Support Team on Indigenous and Local Knowledge Systems (IPBES Work programme 2020-2022).

Specifically the incumbant shall:

  • Work to implement LINKS’ responsibilities within BES-Net II, in particular in ensuring that indigenous and local knowledge (ILK), and the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC), become central to the BES-Net process;
  • Communicate and coordinate with UNESCO partners in UNDP and UNEP WCMC;
  • Strengthen ILK components and the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in science-policy-practice interactions and networks within the BES-Net Trialogues;
  • Support work with ILK and the participation of IPLCs within National Ecosystems Assessments (NEAs) and national science policy platforms;
  • Support implementation of priority BES solutions, by enhancing the IPLC/practitioner community representatives’ engagement in the national BES platforms and their participation in and contribution to the post-Trialogue/NEA activities;
  • Provide technical, logistical, communications, facilitation and reporting support to activities necessary to implement the project; 
  • Support LINKS within the BES-Net Process including fulfilling reporting functions. Notably support general monitoring and reporting on related activities through SISTER, update of the project database and drafting of reports in liaison with colleagues at HQ and field offices.

  • Advanced University degree (Master’s or equivalent) in natural or social sciences.

Work experience

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience working with IPLC on indigenous and local knowledge of the environment, at local, national or international levels;
  • Experience in project management.


  • Strong analytical, negotiating, facilitation and advocacy skills;
  • Excellent project management and coordination skills;
  • Excellent writing skills, including ability to draft, edit and produce reports on relevant issues;
  • Ability to take initiative and propose innovative and creative ideas and solutions;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to maintain effective working relations in a multicultural environment;
  • Strong IT skills, including with Microsoft Office software.


  • Excellent knowledge of English (oral and written).


Work experience

  • Experience  with intergovernmental environmental processes;
  • Experience in the planning and organization of international workshops and seminars in developing countries;
  • Hands-on work experience within the United Nations system and/or international organizations.


  • Solid understanding of and experience working with indigenous peoples, preferably in a region vulnerable to the impacts of climate change;
  • Interdisciplinary expertise in natural and social sciences, with an emphasis on biodiversity or related areas of natural resource management;
  • Ability to work under pressure in a complex and changing environment;
  • Ability to work in close partnership with a wide range of national, regional and international organizations, especially in relation to indigenous peoples;
  • Good knowledge of UNESCO programmes and/or knowledge of UNESCO management and administration system.


  • Knowledge of Spanish;
  • Knowledge of other official UNESCO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian).
