Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Communications, Information and Outreach (CIO), Office of the Secretary-General (OSG) of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Geneva.
Under the supervision of the Public Information Officer (Web and Social Media) and with delegated authority via the Chief of Communications, Information and Outreach, the Website Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
Manages UNCTAD’s Web presence:
• Manages day-to-day updates to the content of UNCTAD Website and sub-sites.
• Sources stories of interest to UNCTAD stakeholders, recommending to the author Divisions questions that may be addressed to make the story compelling to a wider audience and, if necessary, fact-check and rewrite text in a style suitable for online reading.
• Posts news items, blogs and feature articles in a style suitable for online reading on both desktops and mobile devices, with multimedia content.
• In collaboration with the Social Media Officer, Chief of CIO, other CIO colleagues and Divisions, plans the stories and events to be featured as Highlights on the home page and create the required images.
• Ensures linkage between Website content and content on UNCTAD’s social media channels, and vice versa.
Manages the creation/re-design of sub-sites and conference Websites:
• Collaborates with Divisional Focal Points to re-think/re-design their Websites and produce a roadmap for implementation, including: drafting of text, creation of visual content, logging and tagging of documents, training of staff, etc.
• Creates or revises the Website in accordance with the defined site architecture and agreed graphical presentation.
• Checks for usability and functionality across popular web access devices and platforms, including mobile and tablets devices; adjusting designs accordingly by implementing responsive scripts and other design techniques.
• Provides guidance and training to Divisional staff in the use of SharePoint CMS and Internet publishing procedures.
Oversees the operational aspects of the Website:
• Contributes to ongoing improvements to the functionality of the content management system, by documenting issues that may be problematic; proposing remedial action and testing new solutions developed by Information Technology Support Service.
• Monitors the work of Divisional Web Editors to ensure compliance with UNCTAD’s policies, procedures and online publishing guidelines. Provides training where required.
• Defines and manages the Website “Term Store” [The hierarchical structure of words, labels and terms that is used to classify and display the content consistently.]
• Contributes to the formulation of policies, procedures and guidelines affecting the governance of UNCTAD’s Web presence.
Maintains UNCTAD’s repository of Documents and Publications:
• Advises, and informally supervises, junior colleagues when they log UNCTAD publications on the Website; ensures that the correct taxonomy and keywords are applied to facilitate the retrieval of documents by internal and external search engines.
• Drafts promotional Webflyer texts and collaborates with UNCTAD’s graphics service on the design.
Coordinates the publishing of information related to Intergovernmental Meetings:
• Advises, and informally supervises, junior colleagues to ensure that all intergovernmental meetings are logged as per the official TDB calendar, and that Notifications, Sessional Documents and Programme Timetables are logged as soon as they are finalized.
• Select suitable text to be posted under Key Issues.
• Ensure that Contributions, Statements and Presentations are correctly logged by Divisional Web Editors.
• Liaises with Information Technology Support Service to ensure that someone is always available to take photos – to be posted on Flickr and displayed in the Website.
Assists in the management of UNCTAD’s social media channels:
• Assists the Social Media Officer and/or Chief of CIO in developing social media campaigns to publicize major UNCTAD events, publications and findings, in coordination with substantive divisions.
• Creates engaging social media content – including by sourcing photos and infographics from online image banks and UNCTAD’s graphics service, and selecting appropriate hashtags and user tags — to maximize the dissemination of UNCTAD’s messages and information.
• Programmes the release of social media content to ensure UNCTAD’s platforms appear timely and are compelling.
• Monitors the impact of social media campaigns by providing metrics on reach and engagement for input in the CIO Monthly Monitor and for ad hoc assessments.
• Participates in the meeting of UN Social Media Managers, to keep abreast of social media trends and UN social media campaigns of relevance to UNCTAD.
• Contributes, in collaboration with the Social Media Officer and Chief of CIO, to the formulation of policies, procedures and guidelines affecting the governance of UNCTAD’s use of social media channels.
Knowledge of current information and communications technologies, business strategies and trends related to web and social media. Ability to rapidly analyse and integrate diverse information from varied sources. Knowledge of the full range of communications approaches, tools, and methodologies essential to planning and executing effective campaigns. Ability to handle sensitive situations diplomatically with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. High school diploma or equivalent is required.
At least seven years of experience in Web and information management, is required, of which preferably one year within the UN Common System.
Experience with web and social media standard practices, such as content creation, technical aspects of page design and publication, platform governance, and analytics, is desirable.
Experience in creating graphical content is desirable. Experience using the Bootstrap framework and Sharepoint is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and knowledge of French are required.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.
Passing the United Nations Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) at Headquarters, ECA, ESCWA, UNOG, UNOV, ICTR, ICTY or the Global General Services Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
