Org. Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Geneva. The incumbent will work under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Statistical Information Technologies Unit, Development Statistics and Information Branch (DSIB), Division on Globalization and Development Strategies (DGDS).
Within delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief of the Unit, the Senior Statistics Assistant:
• Prepares statistical publications (including charts, graphs, statistics tables, maps, infographics) for dissemination, reporting and presentation of various data in print and web formats.
• Maintains/updates internal and external web pages. Responds to queries/requests, disseminates statistical information and animates social networks.
• Collects, evaluates, processes, and analyzes statistical data from a variety of sources. Processes, classifies and ensures internal consistency of data; reconciles discrepancies in data series. Builds special data sets for specific research needs or for reports.
• Maintains relevant computerized databases and web data servers. Applies, tests, maintains and executes programs for specific statistical applications on the basis of specifications provided.
• Responds to internal/external requests on questions related to specific programme(s). Assists in liaising with United Nations system organizations to obtain necessary statistical and other relevant information.
• Supervises and guides other general service staff in the function, as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Professionalism : Ability to process statistical data and manage statistical databases. Ability to design, layout and produce statistical publications and web sites. Knowledge of HTML syntax and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS). High school diploma or equivalent is required. Course work/specialized training in statistics is desirable.
At least 10 years of experience in the field of economic statistics, the processing of statistical data and the management of statistical databases is required. At least 5 years of experience in web and print publication design and layout using the Adobe suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver) is required. At least 5 years of experience with the Beyond 20/20 suite (Data Connection Wizard, Visual Builder, Web Data Server) is required. Experience in statistical data visualization and infographics production is desirable. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Access, Excel) and Microsoft SharePoint is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.
Passing the United Nations Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) at Headquarters, ECA, ESCWA, UNOG, UNOV, ICTR, ICTY or the Global General Services Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat.
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
