Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located within the Conflict and Development (CDS), Emerging and Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) Division of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Research Assistant reports directly to the Chief, CDS and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of ECRI.
Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
1 – Researches, extracts and compiles basic information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues.
2 – Sorts, consolidates, extracts and processes data and enter into relevant database.
3 – Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
4 – Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
5 – Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
6 – Assists in the maintenance of relevant computerized databases.
7 – Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
8 – Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
9 – Reviews, stores, classifies, and maintains relevant computerized databases.
10 – Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
11 – Collects organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information.
12 – Co-ordinates and sets up press briefings, press statements, pamphlets or other public awareness campaigns to educate public on any specific issue.
13 – Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff.
14 – Performs other related work as required.

High school diploma or equivalent. A first level university degree in Economics, Statistics, or Mathematics is desirable.
A minimum of five years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required. Demonstrated experience in using advanced statistical techniques and automation methods (such as standardizing data streams, data flows and processes for analysis and dissemination) is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test when they are short-listed for a job opening. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) in English at the United Nations Headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST per applicable eligibility guidelines.
In addition to the above, the shortlisted candidates may undergo a substantive written assessment related to the functions of the post and an interview. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
This position is temporarily available through 31 December 2019. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
