Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located within the Reproduction and Document Distribution Unit (RDDU), Conference Services Section (CSS), Administrative Services Division (ASD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Assembly and Binding Equipment Assistant reports directly to the RDDU supervisor and will be under the overall supervision of the Chief of CSS.

Responsibilities

The Assembly and Binding Equipment Assistant will be responsible for carrying out the following functions:

Collate and bind ESCWA publications, brochures, meeting papers and reports:
1- Trim the printed sheets and the cover to the desired size;
2- Collate the printed spreads on the PA-t Bourg tower: feed bins with 250-300 sheets; adjust the suction area rod; adjust the air level suction system; choose the finishing attachment and set the programme on the electronic board; adjust the Bourg Booklet Maker (folding and stapling specifications); collect the sets and continue manually until all the document is fully collated; install proper wire; prepare the document for final trimming;
3- Cut the collated sheets on the guillotine machine;
4- Staple using the Agrafix;
5- Glue the cover to the document on the Muller Martini Baby Poney;
6- Trim the document on three sides on the Polar Mohr Guillotine;
Fold pamphlets, cards and wall charts:
7- Use the “Stahl Tremat GMBH” machine or the “MultiPli 35”;
8- Trim the printed sheets to the desired size on the Guillotine;
9- Adjust the folding knives and the air suction system and proceed;
10- Fold and finalize folders and CD pockets;
11- Bind and trim calendars and notebooks;
Other functions:
12- Cut sheets of paper into spreads for offset printing on the polar Mohr guillotine;
13- Laminate flyers with limited quantities on the USI hot lamination machine;
14- Conduct periodic light maintenance to the machines to ensure the smooth running of operations;
15- Participate in inventories of reproduction supplies and equipment;
16- Propose and develop improved procedures to expedite processing of tasks;
17- Assist in preparing polyester masters (if the press operator needs urgent assistance);
18- Undertake any other assignment as requested by the supervisor or the Chief.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

A minimum of 3 years of diversified experience in all binding and finishing techniques to allow fast processing of documents, including experience in operating the following machines to ensure the ability to adjust them and keep them in good working condition: Tower Collator; Polar Mohr Electronic Guillotine; Muller Martini Baby Pony 2116 Gluing Machine; Stahl Tremat GMBH folding Machine; Agrafix Stapling Machine; Muller Martini Collating Machine.

Languages

English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in English and Arabic is required.

Assessment

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test when they are short-listed for a job opening. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) in English at the United Nations Headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST per applicable eligibility guidelines. 

In addition to the above, the shortlisted candidates will undergo a substantive written assessment related to the functions of the post and/or a competency-based interview. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.

Special Notice

Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates shall be recruited in the country of the duty station, irrespective of nationality and length of time the candidate may have been in the country. If no suitable candidate is identified, overseas candidates will be considered subject to a passing grade on the relevant entry-level examinations at the duty station. 

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General, who may assign them to any task or function in the organization. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions during their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures. 

The candidate is responsible for any expenses incurred in order to take the examination and, in the event of an employment offer, any costs relating to travel and relocation to the duty station.
